Fielded Search

The Fielded Search form helps create Boolean queries by providing boxes, where information such as keywords, assignees, dates, countries, classifications etc., can be entered.

The Fielded search form is a guided search form to help create complex queries without having deep knowledge of the commands and structure within Quartet.

The Fielded search button is located along the top of the Search Project page:

Clicking the fielded search button opens a new modal over top of the current screen. This means that the fielded search can be accessed from anywhere in Quartet without interrupting your current workflow or state.

2_9

From this modal pop up, different options for search fields are shown. While the initial number of groups and fields can seem like a lot, fields which aren’t filled out are ignored by the system. What is shown by default are fields which are commonly used. If fields need to be changed, clicking the “new field” button within this modal will allow for choosing a new field from the option of every field.

Individual fields can be removed by clicking the bin icon on the right of the field. Entire groups can be removed by clicking the X in the top right on a group.

It is important to note that after a sub-field category has been chosen, for example IPC is under the “Classification Fields”, the exact choice can be changed from a drop-down menu. Thus, one classification field has been chosen, it is easy to switch between different classification fields.

Additionally, there is now the ability to run class codes simultaneously in IPC and CPC, which was always possible through the command line, but is now available also through fielded search.

Fielded search also gives control over how to define relationships between fields in two ways. Fields are sorted into multiple groups, where control is given over the relationships both within the group, as well as relationships between each group.

Intergroup relationships can be controlled by the drop down menu at the top of each group:

From this drop-down menu, the relationship between the fields within this group can be chosen. In this context, the group will OR together each sub field. If multiple types of fields are chosen it will OR those together as well. For example, this orientation will search for full text for Satellite OR GPS OR will grab any document with the CPC code H04W4/02

6_9

More complex relationships can be defined once multiple groups are created. For example, adding another group, and moving the CPC field will now result in a search for full text for Satellite OR GPS only within documents with the CPC code H04W4/02.

7_9

Individual fields can be duplicated by clicking on the + icon to the right of the relevant fields.
Fields can be dragged an dropped, both within the group but also to another group, by clicking on the dots to the left of the field and dragging the field to the desired position.

Additionally, you can modify all groups and all fields so that they must appear within the same publication. This can be done with a check-box at the top.

For more information on this, see SPUB within the “Field Modifiers” topic

A helpful tool within the new fielded search is the “Open in command editor” button in the top right. This will allow you to see how the fielded search can be edited in the command editor, learning commands and syntax.

For example, the previous example, shown in the command editor shows as such:

Changes can be made within this view, and the edited command can then be run. Note the button in the top right can be used to return to the fielded search view. However, it is important to note that any changes made in the command editor view cannot be carried over to the visual editor. A warning will be displayed when this is attempted, and the option given to return to the visual editor with the previous fields filled out.

Date

  • Each date box accepts dates in the YYYY-MM-DD format.
  • Inputting only a “From” date creates a search query that searches for families with a date that is more recent than the entered date.
  • Inputting only a “To” date creates a search query that searches for families with a date that is before the entered date.
  • Inputting a date in both “To” and “From” creates a search query that searches for families with a respective date between the two dates.
